With the release of the brand new album by The Pollyseeds now unveiled, and work on the new album by Herbie Hancock still to come - producer, songwriter and saxophonist Terrace Martin is riding a well-deserved wave of incredible success so here's a list of 5 songs of which either featured, or were produced by the brilliant Terrace Martin that you might, maybe, perhaps, didn't know had him involved...
'Memories' by Adam Turchin featuring Terrace Martin, Rose Gold, Brandon Ashe, Josef Leimberg & Robert "Sput" Searight
Producer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Turchin delivered his stellar debut outing earlier this year through Ropeadope Records and boasted an incredible lineup of musicians including of course friend and collaborator, Terrace Martin. Martin appears on several songs throughout - on vocoder and sax duties - but it's the album closer that really steals the show here.
'For Free?' by Kendrick Lamar
'To Pimp A Butterfly' - the seminal album from Kendrick Lamar is everything it has always been proclaimed to be so probably requires little introduction. The bold embrace of jazz throughout - along with the slew of musicians it introduced to the world - proved to be a winner and it's in no small part down to songs with the charm and personality of 'For Free?' [Read our exclusive feature on the musicians involved here].
'The Awakening' by Josef Leimberg
We've gushed over this release by trumpeter Josef Leimberg many times on this site - so one more time couldn't hurt! Leimberg - the other half of the production duo with Martin called LoveDragon - creates a masterful and exquisite album and two songs featuring Terrace on sax can only be a good thing. We'll leave you with their cover of Miles Davis's 'Lonely Fire'...
'Give em Hell' by Talib Kweli f/t Coi Mattison & Lyfe Jennings
Sharing production duties with Battlecat on this song, from 2007, Terrace Martin found himself on an album with heavy-hitting guests and heavy-hitting production but his contribution delivered one of the standout tracks from Kweli's biggest-selling solo album.
'Persevere' by Robert Glasper Experiment f/t Luke James, Snoop Dogg & Lupe Fiasco
Robert Glasper's 'Black Radio' series went on to solidify the band as a household name after its crossover appeal and the inclusion of vocalists Jill Scott, Lalah Hathaway and Erykah Badu. While most of the stars took centre-stage, our spotlighted star jumped in behind the boards for his longtime friend and collaborator making a star-studded track even more star-studded.
